While ArtSpa is not therapy,
it has much in common with therapy.
For ArtSpa to function at its best, participants must be mindful of themselves, others, and the space.
These are a few guidelines:
What happens in group stays in group. For all members to feel safe in sharing, we must respect group confidentiality. Talking to anyone outside the group about what other members specifically say or do in an identifiable way is unethical, unkind, and is simply not ok.
Compassion and respect for all members is vital to creating a group that can do good work. Group is an excellent opportunity for all of us to practice patience, listening, encouragement, open-mindedness, and honest self-expression. Respectful behavior is essential. Respectful, honest communication is encouraged.
Expressive art-making can connect you with deep emotions. If strong feelings come up, take care of yourself. Don't just go along with the group to fit in. The ArtSpa Experience is about honoring what you are really feeling.
If you need to step out of the room, feel free to do so, just let someone know so we don't worry.
If you need support, please ask for what you need. We are glad to support you.
If another group member is having an intense experience, do your best to hold the space. That means be present and ground yourself and fill the room with positive energy to support the whole group and that individual.
Be mindful. Developing present self-awareness is the primary goal of ArtSpa's work.
Be mindful of others while you are working (how do you affect others with your use of space, movement, sound, etc.?).
Be mindful when you are sharing. Make sure you say what you need to say and make sure others have ample time to share as well. Every member's contributions enrich the group.
Be mindful of the materials. Please clean up after yourself and take good care of the materials and supplies. Wash out brushes, clean up spills, keep the materials tidy so everyone can find what they need. Keep materials that can still be used.
Be mindful of the space. We are guests in the Hemleben's beautiful studio. Our goal is to find a balance between free self-expression and treating this space with care.
Be mindful of your own experience. This work is about opening to your authentic experience in a world that encourages us to medicate ourselves with food, TV, shopping, busy-ness, etc. ArtSpa is a place where you can slow down and find out something new about yourself. It is a chance for you to leave the world of distraction on the other side of the door for two hours and play, explore, create and enjoy in the present moment.
If something comes up that you need help with (practical, emotional, physical, or otherwise), let the facilitator know as soon as possible. We're here to help.
